Houston, Texas – The Maritime Workers Emergency Medical Fund, an industry non-profit group formed to assist maritime families alleviate financial stress during times of medical crisis hosted a golf tournament in conjunction with Breakbulk Americas Conference in Houston. The event was held on two golf courses at the Wildcat Golf Club with over 200 golfers in attendance. Due to the generous support of over 60 sponsors the Maritime Fund was able to raise over $60,000.00.

Over the past few years, The Maritime Fund has been able to achieve greater awareness and exposure in the South Texas counties we serve. We wish to thank our Maritime Hero sponsors Port of Houston , Breakbulk Americas and Ceres Gulf Inc for making that journey with us.

The annual golf tournament is one of two major fund raisers the group Board schedules each year. The volunteer Board is comprised of industry leaders including; Jeff Hakala, retired Ceres Gulf Inc., Stephen Garifalos, Mediterranean Shipping, Ernest Bezdek, Port of Beaumont, Clay Woodgate Scafom-Rux Holdings, Ed Bastian, BBC Chartering US, LLC, Leah Martinez, Zeaborn Shipping, Christopher Palmer, Crane Worldwide Logistics and Alan Robb, ILA South Atlantic and Gulf Coast District.

The fund was created in memory of transportation industry veteran Jerry Nagel, who was a leader in the breakbulk industry and was honored as the 2012 Maritime Person of the Year by the Greater Houston Port Bureau.
